PET Lamp Gurunsi and the Frafra weavers – Alvaro Catalán De Ocón
Certosa di San Martino
The PET Lamp Gurunsi project by Álvaro Catalán de Ocón will be presented at the Certosa di San Martino, in the Chiostro dei Procuratori. The Spanish designer’s work stems from the encounter between contemporary design and Ghanaian craftsmanship, transforming plastic bottles into unique lamps that tell stories of sustainability and social inclusion. Each piece reflects the shared creativity between the designer and local artisans, celebrating textile traditions while promoting community work and female participation. PET Lamp Gurunsi represents the latest evolution of a project that began years ago and has since gained international recognition. Here, the PET Lamp moves beyond its role as a simple light object to acquire an architectural and immersive dimension. Álvaro Catalán de Ocón’s project takes shape as a suspended tapestry, a lighting element that enters into dialogue with the surrounding space. The inspiration drawn from the family compounds of the Frafra, a subgroup of the Gurunsi peoples, is translated into circular forms and intricate weaves that, crossed by light, create evocative shadow play, keeping the essence of local cultures
