With the main support of Crédit Agricole Italia, reflecting the group’s commitment to territories and communities by promoting culture, sustainability, ecological transition and collective participation, this exhibition brings to Naples the most spectacular outcome of Margaret and Christine Wertheim’s art/research project “The Crochet Coral Reef.”

Combining art, science and community practice, the exhibition comprises a textile installation made entirely by crochet that mimics, through organic forms and saturated colours, the structures of living coral reefs.

This iteration of the project, developed in collaboration with the Museum Frieder Burda in Baden-Baden, Germany, involved over 4,000 people from many countries, who contributed more than 40,000 crochet coral forms. Under the curatorial guidance of Christine Wertheim, these elements were assembled into the largest crochet reef ever created: a woollen archipelago of six giant islands.

Two of these are on display here. Christine Wertheim will present the project in a dedicated lecture scheduled for Friday, 9 October, at a particularly meaningful moment, one year after the discovery of a coral reef located 500 metres below the surface of the Gulf of Naples.
